Wimpy Kid Club

Attention all fans of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid! North-East Public Library will host a book club at the library at 5 p.m. Attendees will read from the book, act out scenes, create crafts and play games.

Mexican American Fast Pitch Softball Leagues: Connecting Communities Across State Lines

Curated by Dr. Gene T. Chavez and presented by the Kansas City Museum in partnership with El Centro, Inc., Mexican American Fast Pitch Softball Leagues: Connecting Communities Across State Lines is an exhibition exploring the rich history and legacy of Mexican American fast pitch softball leagues in Missouri and Kansas. Opening on the weekend that the 2015 National Conference of La Raza’s (NCLR) annual conference comes to Kansas City, this exhibition features a documentary film based on oral histories of former players and items from personal collections including photographs, uniforms, league documents, trophies, and other historical materials. On view from July 11 – September 5, 2015. Exhibition tours are free and will be available on the hour from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday.

International Market Place Discussion

At the Kansas City Public Library’s Central branch, 14 W. 10th St, travel the world without leaving Kansas City. Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Bobbi Baker-Hughes discusses efforts to re-brand Independence Avenue as Kansas City’s International Market Place. Independence Avenue is home to a number of ethnic grocers, jewelry and apparel stores, and some of the best restaurants in Kansas City; but many outside of the Northeast have never heard of them, let alone visited. The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

Northeast Farmer’s Market

Northeast Farmers’ Market is open Thursdays, 4 – 7 p.m., until Oct. 1, at the corner of Independence and Gladstone Avenues. They accept cash, debit cards, and EBT. Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Chair Fitness

Join North-East Public Library at 9:30 a.m. for physical fitness. No matter what your limitations, maybe you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to give you a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Join the Kansas City Museum on the museum grounds from 7 – 9 p.m., for a free performance from the band Sad American Night.

Sign removal and breakfast

Join the Kansas City Museum Sign for breakfast and to watch them remove the iconic “Kansas City Museum of Science and History” on Saturday, Aug. 15. Breakfast takes places from 9 – 10:15 a.m. with the sign removal following at 10:30 a.m. The museum is asking anyone who plans to attend to RSVP by contacting Paul Gutierrez at paul.gutierrez@kcmo.org or 816-513-0726 by Thursday, Aug. 13 to ensure your free breakfast.

Indian Mound Neighborhood Meeting

Indian Mound Neighborhood Association will host its next monthly meeting August 24 at 6:30 p.m. at 5415 Community Garden, located at 5415 St. John Ave., next to the car wash. The association will be collecting dues for 2015-16 membership, as well as show off the community garden. See the progress they’ve made and the fence that they’ve built with a grant from CCF. A representative from CCF will be on hand to take photos of the community interacting in the garden. Hot dogs, soda, chips, and other snacks will be provided.

NEKC International Taste and Tour
