Mexican American Fast Pitch Softball Leagues: Connecting Communities Across State Lines

Curated by Dr. Gene T. Chavez and presented by the Kansas City Museum in partnership with El Centro, Inc., Mexican American Fast Pitch Softball Leagues: Connecting Communities Across State Lines is an exhibition exploring the rich history and legacy of Mexican American fast pitch softball leagues in Missouri and Kansas. Opening on the weekend that the 2015 National Conference of La Raza’s (NCLR) annual conference comes to Kansas City, this exhibition features a documentary film based on oral histories of former players and items from personal collections including photographs, uniforms, league documents, trophies, and other historical materials. On view from July 11 – September 5, 2015. Exhibition tours are free and will be available on the hour from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday.

River Market Rail Rally

Celebrate another achievement in the downtown streetcar development. Join in for the fun at the River Market Rail Rally from 5 – 7 p.m., on 5th street, between Main and Walnut! Northeast Farmer’s Market

The Northeast Farmer’s Market will be open Thursdays from June 4 to October 1, at the corner of Independence Avenue and Gladstone Boulevard. They will accept EBT/SNAP and participate in the Beans&Greens program (so $25 EBT + $50 food). Learn more at www.facebook.com/NEKCFarmersMarket.

Join North-East Public Library at 9:30 a.m. for physical fitness. No matter what your limitations, maybe you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to give you a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Story Time and Craft

Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Movies after Dark

Join the River Market for a screening of the R-rated classic,The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Located at Third and Main Streets within the City Market Park. Admission is free. The movie begins after sunset at approximately 9 p.m.

Computer Class

Learn about navigating your computer in this class, which offers insight into hardware and software components. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the North-East Public Library.

Communiversity Spanish Class

Join the North-East Public Library at 10:30 a.m. to learn how to speak conversational Spanish.

Acoustic Jams on the Portico

Join the Kansas City Museum from 1 – 3 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month for a free jam session. On the front porch and lawn of Corinthian Hall for an acoustic jam. All styles of music are welcome. The jams mostly feature three cord songs and participants take turns leading songs. Beginners are welcome. For inquires, contact jam coordinator Peter Gross at (816) 674-0393. These jams will continue on the first Saturday of each month through October. No RSVP necessary.

Join the Kansas City Museum Sign for breakfast and to watch them remove the iconic “Kansas City Museum of Science and History” on Saturday, Aug. 15.
