KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The market opens this week.

Northeast residents are invited to attend a ribbon cutting for the Northeast Farmers’ Market grand opening. The market will open at 4 p.m., Thursday, June 4, and will remain open from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursdays until Oct. 1, 2015. The ribbon cutting will take place 10 minutes before opening, at 3:50 p.m. The market is located in the parking lot of the Independence Boulevard Christian Church, 606 Gladstone Blvd.

According to a press release from the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, the Northeast Farmers’ Market will give area residents the opportunity to shop weekly for choice meat, fresh fruit and veggies, milk, and other goods like coffee and baked foods. There will be no sales tax on purchases and double the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP] benefits, “make the food very affordable.”

“There will be musicians and entertainment available making it fun for the whole family to shop and enjoy,” Jenna Wilkins, market developer, said in the release.

The release added that the goal of the Northeast Farmers’ Market is to create an annual tradition and routine for the people of the Northeast to be able to shop for locally grown food, as well as gather together to a be a part of a fun and entertaining environment. Another goal is to provide, gainfully, to its vendors by making sure the market is well attended each week. Initially formed as La Chalupa at Mattie Rhodes, the market wished for more community visibility throughout the Northeast. Continued desire to serve the Northeast community, five vendors decided to start what will now be the Northeast Farmers Market.
