KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Memorial Day weekend is supposed to be the unofficial start of summer.

And that may still be the mindset for area residents, one thing people won’t be able to do after the barbeque or visit with family is swim at a city pool.

Cool temperatures will prevent Kansas City’s Parks and Recreation Department from opening public water parks and major pools this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, the holiday week could see thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures sitting around 70 degrees all weekend.

The following sites will now open once the temperature hits 70 degrees:

  • Grove Park Pool, Benton Blvd. & Truman Rd.
  • Budd Park Pool, Budd Park Esplanade &  Denver Ave.
  • The Springs Aquatic Center, 9400 N Congress
  • The Bay Water Park, 7101 Longview Rd.
  • Swope Pool, 6700 Lewis Rd.
  • Brush Creek Community Center, Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. and Cleveland Ave.
  • Line Creek Community Center, 5940 NE Waukomis

There is some good news, though. Spraygrounds, with the exception of Longview Tract at The Bay Water Park, will open on Saturday as planned.
