KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kansas City, Mo., is set to welcome thousands of visitors this week, beginning tonight, to enjoy events like the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament and Planet Comicon.The city is advising everyone that these events will impact traffic flow and parking downtown.

The following streets will be closed to accommodate events as part of the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament:

  • Grand Boulevard (between 13th Street and Truman Road): currently closed through 3 a.m. Sunday, March 15.
  • 14th Street (between Walnut Street and Grand Boulevard): currently closed through 3 a.m. Sunday, March 15.
  • Walnut Street (between 13th and 14th Streets): currently closed through midnight Sunday, March 15.

Truman Road (between Grand Boulevard and Oak Street) will have lane closures through 3 a.m. Sunday, March 15.In addition, Kansas City’s Big 12 Run will close the following streets on Saturday, March 14, starting at 10 a.m. and last until the conclusion of the race, roughly around 12:30 p.m.:

  • Grand Boulevard (between Eighth and 12th Streets, and between Pershing and Truman Roads)
  • Eighth Street (between Grand Boulevard and Holmes Street)
  • Holmes Street (between 8th and 18th Streets)
  • Truman Road (between Holmes Street and Woodland Avenue, and between Grand Boulevard and Oak Street)
  • Woodland Avenue (between Truman Road and 18th Street)
  • 18th Street (between Woodland and Highland Avenues, and between Grand Boulevard and Holmes Street)
  • Highland Avenue (between 17th Terrace and 18th Street)
  • 17th Terrace (between Highland Avenue and Paseo Boulevard)
  • Paseo Boulevard (between 17th Terrace and 31st Street)
  • 31st Street (between Paseo Boulevard and Gillham Road)
  • Gillham Road (between 31st Street and Pershing Road)
  • Pershing Road (between Gillham Road and Grand Boulevard)
  • Oak Street (between Truman Road and 9th Street)
  • 9th Street (between Oak Street and Grand Boulevard)

To accommodate Kansas City’s visitors, the city offers mass transportation and more than 40,000 parking spaces downtown. Information regarding parking can be found online on the city’s parking page, which includes a list of parking garages maintained by the city. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) operates local and express routes, demand-response, bus rapid transit, para-transit, and vanpool services. The Main Street MAX line is offering more frequent service for the Big 12 Tournament. Additionally, during the Big 12 events from March 11 – March 14, Kansas City’s taxi cabs will post a temporary taxi stand on 13th Street (between Oak Street and Grand Boulevard). During this time, taxis will turn north on Grand Boulevard.
