KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Fifth District Councilman Michael Brooks has submitted his letter of resignation to the city.

Brooks informed the Kansas City Council and Mayor Sly James that he will resign, to become effective on Jan. 2, 2015. Brooks cites the “ongoing media circus” and concern for his “family, loved ones, colleagues, church members, and citizens of Kansas City” following an investigation that he allegedly choked an aide on Nov. 4, 2014.

Brooks also noted in his letter that he made the decision not to run for reelection, and for that reason, he feels, “it is not prudent for me to continue my duties at this time.” This was Brooks’ first term as a city council member.

He closed his letter by saying it has been an honor serving on the City Council and for the citizens of the Fifth District. There are also a few projects with the Health Commission, Violence Free KC Committee, and Head Start Advisory Board that he said he’d like to complete before passing on to their leadership.
