Dear Editor,

Haven’t written before but feel the need. I was appalled when one of our main thoroughfares was named after Sen. Cleaver. Seems that the shortsighted have a front row seat. I would take your suggestion to call either Mrs. Curls or Mr. Reed BUT they do not talk to us, we talk to their assistants. I’ve been calling Mrs. Curls for years and have a good relationship with Reva — the problem is this — NO ONE VOTED FOR REVA or any other assistant.

There have been great changes here in the Third District that seem to have escaped our council persons. We have a huge influx of Hispanics. A boon to the community as they purchase houses and remake them. As you drive down the streets, your eyes are filled with beautiful houses, neat yards and an absence of trash up and down the street. Businesses that broaden our tax base, etc.

I believe we need to give the naming of landmarks to the voters. Many persons have contributed to the Eastside and they were of many persuasions. We seem to be naming everything in sight along a predominately racial line and I don’t like it. In fact, I resent it. Ours is a very colorful history, having been the jumping off point of wagon trains and forward thinking people who would found great cities and open the west to trade and prosperity.

Lets look back into our past and, if we MUST name every stone and bump in the road, find some more deserving than Mr. Jordan.
