KANSAS CITY, Missouri — One person has been charged after shooting and killing a man outside of City Hall.

By 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, only 10 hours after the shooting death of Jai T. Scott near City Hall occurred, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said at a press conference that Rickey C. Battee, 24, of Kansas City, has been charged with second-degree murder, a class A felony, and armed criminal action.

According to court records, a sergeant with the KCPD was alerted to the shooting by and followed the suspect until additional officers responded to the area and took Battee into custody. Battee was taken into custody without incident. A witness to the incident said she saw Battee kick the Scott’s car as he drove by. Scott got out of his car and a fight ensued. Video from a metro bus showed Scott was walking south on Oak Street when Battee produced a handgun and shot him. The victim was found near 11th and Oak Streest and died later at the hospital.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000.
