KANSAS CITY, Missouri – A few area students learned how to be safe on Halloween from members of the Kansas City Police Department’s East Patrol Division.

Last Friday, Sgt. Cory LeMoine and Public Information Officer Jason Cooley played host to eight students from Gladstone Elementary’s early childhood learning class. The students toured the station, saw the department ATVs and horses and received treats as they learned what they should and shouldn’t do while trick-or-treating. The group also saw the station’s haunted jail cells, which featured a skeleton and more treats for the children.

LeMoine taught the students to never enter anyone’s home unless they know the person, to trick-or-treat in groups, never run across the street and to stay in well lit, populated areas. He also suggested to the parents they check the children’s candy before letting them eat it and avoid equipping costumes with toy guns because they could get mistaken for the real thing.

Karen Favor, early childhood and special education teacher at Gladstone, said the trip was orchestrated because the students recently learned about community helpers, organizers and the role of police.

“Sergeant LeMoine enjoyed having us and coming up with ideas to show the students what the police do in communities,” Favor said.
