KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Although Kansas City has had a mild summer so far, high temperatures have returned.

City officials want to remind residents how to beat the heat during especially high temperatures by following these tips:

-Do not use a fan as your primary source of cooling on extremely hot days. If your home does not have air conditioning, please go to an air-conditioned location such as the city’s community centers, which are open as cooling centers during regular business hours. Please visit www.kcparks.org and click on the “Centers” tab for information on community centers.
-Check on your neighbors, friends and relatives at least twice a day (morning and night).
-Never leave children alone in closed vehicles. The temperature inside a car can quickly reach more than 140 degrees, which can be fatal within minutes.
-Avoid the heat of the day by engaging in outdoor activities and games early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler and the sun is not directly overhead.
-Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
-Stay indoors as much as possible during the heat of the day in an air-conditioned environment. If you have to work outside or in a non-air-conditioned workplace, take frequent breaks and rest in the shade or cooler environment.
-Dress for the weather: wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. This type of clothing reflects heat and helps maintain normal body temperature. If you have to be outside, cover as much skin as possible to avoid sunburn. Protect your face and head with a wide-brimmed hat. Wear sunscreen.
-Avoid extreme temperature changes, such as a taking a cool shower immediately after coming inside from hot temperatures.
-Pay extra attention to your pets during summer heat blasts. Never leave a pet alone in a vehicle and limit their time outside. The city requires owners to provide adequate shade and shelter for their animals, or they will be cited for animal cruelty — a law which carries a severe penalty. To report animal cruelty or any other animal-related issues, contact the City’s 311 Call Center. After hours, or on weekends, please call 911.
