Rev. Sharon Kay Garfield

Rev. Sharon Kay Garfield, age 68, of Lamar, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014 surrounded by her family at her home.

Sharon was born June 30, 1945 at Watseka, Illinois, one of the four children of Earl and Velma (Tuttle) Garfield. She moved with her family to Lamar in 1948.  After graduating from Lamar High School, Sharon earned a bachelor’s degree from Park College and a Master of Divinity from St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. She then embarked on a life-long calling in United Methodist Church ministry, much of it in inner city missions. Serving in Kansas City for more than forty years, Sharon was on staff at Grace United Community Ministries, was CEO of Mission Agency, established and worked at the New House Battered Women’s Shelter. In 1986, she was called to Washington D.C. where she was the UMC Peace With Justice Director for four years. Sharon retired and returned to Lamar in 2011 to be near family.

Survivors include two brothers, Walter (Jane) Garfield and Rev. Larry (Dorris) Garfield, and a sister, Virginia (Joel) Berry all of Lamar. “Aunt Shay” will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her nephews and nieces, Pamela (Rev. Wayne) Coble, Rev. Mark (Kenda) Garfield, Gregory (Tracy) Berry, Terry Garfield& Chelsea Clements, Rev. Jonathan Kent (Karen) Garfield, and Rev. Bryan (Carmen) Garfield, Tim (Tracy) Booth, Erin (Mark) Lawrence, and Christopher Berry. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Michael Allen Garfield.

A memorial service will also be held at the Grace United Community Church, 801 Benton Blvd, Kansas City, MO at 1pm, Saturday March 15th.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Grace United Community Ministries in Kansas City, Oakton United Methodist Church or Lamar First Assembly of God in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
