The 3rd District is continuing to see a renewal and the newly renovated Chas Ball Distribution Warehouse will only add to the positive momentum in the urban core, said City Council member Jermaine Reed.

To celebrate the opening of the Chas Ball Distribution Warehouse, 3255 E. 18th St., city officials hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 23.

For several years, the building sat vacant until Charles Ball Markets, Inc. purchased the warehouse in March of 2013 for its Sun Fresh Market stores. Since purchasing the building, the company has carried out a number of upgrades including roof repairs, electrical upgrades and painting the exterior. Charles Ball Markets declined any offers of real or personal property tax abatement.

“I’m very excited about this facility here. The distribution center is just what we need,” City Council member Melba Curls said.

One of the draws for purchasing the site was its easy highway access, said John Ball, president of Charles Ball Markets. The company officially began operating out of the warehouse about six weeks ago, he said.

“It’s nice,” Ball said. “We’re excited to be able to get it going.”
