McCoy Final Site Design Meeting
Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) will host a final site design meeting for the former McCoy school located in the Blue Valley neighborhood. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Holter Center at St. Paul School of Theology, 5123 E. Truman Rd., Kansas City, Mo. 360 Architecture will reveal the final site design plans and all are invited to attend.

Adult Thursday Movies
Join other adults at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd., Kansas City, Mo., for a movie on the library’s big screen at 10 a.m.

Story Time and Craft
Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers.  Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Saturday, August 17
Community Empowerment Event
The Penny Mill Foundation will host a Community Empowerment Event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 17 at Blue Valley Park, 23rd and Topping, Kansas City, Mo. The day will include live music, dance performances by “Indian Pow Wow”, free hot dogs, soda, popcorn and giveaways. In addition, there will be special speakers, free horse rides, a trick horse show by Rex Purefoy, face painting, KCPD Mounted Patrol and more. All are invited to attend this free event.

Mi Mercado Ribbon Cutting
The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for Mi Mercado, 3719 Independence Ave., at 10 a.m. The Cosentino family has remodeled the former Apple Market store and Aug. 17 will mark the grand opening.

Sly’s Rock the Block
Sly’s Rock the Block will be held from 4 p.m. to midnight at Union Station, East Pershing and Main Street. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., check out the free concert by The Sequel, featuring members from Lo Key. From 8 p.m. to midnight, DJ Fresh will keep it lively. There will also be a free basketball clinic and a photo and autograph session with NBA great Sam Cassell. Free food will be available for the first 2,000 people. Other activities will include carnival games, raffles, inflatables, face painting, a zoo mobile, balloon animals and much more. All are invited to attend this free event.

Director’s Hard Hat Tour
Take an extended tour of Corinthian Hall, the more than 100-year-old  home of lumber baron Robert A. Long and his family, with Kansas City Museum Interim Director Denise Morrison. Advance registration is required and cost is $5. Tour begins at 12:30 p.m.

Thacher Public Meeting
KCPS’ Repurposing Initiative team will meet with the Indian Mound Neighborhood Association during its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the North-East Public Library, 6000 Wilson Rd. KCPS will discuss the next plans for Thacher and its plans to move forward with demolition.

Upcoming
McCoy Demolition Discussion
At the request of community members, KCPS is demolishing the former McCoy school and a public meeting with the demolition contractor will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at the McCoy school site, 1524 White Ave., Kansas City, Mo. The demolition contractor will present phases of demolition and address any questions and concerns.

Un-Chef Cook-Off
Newhouse, a domestic violence shelter for women and their children, will be hosting the fundraiser, Un-Chef Cook-Off, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 12 at Studio 2131 at 2131 Washington St., Kansas City, Mo. The “Un-Chefs” will include KSHB-TV Investigative Reporter Keith King (the 2010 Un-Chef Champion), KSHB-TV Morning Anchor JiaoJiao Shen, and KSHB-TV Meteorologist Kalee Dionne. Watch the Un-Chefs prepare dishes that remind them of home cooking. Find out if they can cook as well as they report the news! Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Northeast International Taste & Tour
Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce will once again host its International Taste & Tour on Sept. 7 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the American Sons of Columbus Hall, 2415 Independence Ave., Kansas City, Mo. More than 20 international restaurants will feature samples and more. In addition, there will be a cash bar, live auction and 50/50 drawing. A social hour and trolley tour will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by sample tastings and a live performance by the Grand Marquis Band from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. From 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. the swing dance troupe, The Swingsters, will perform.
