In a move that was destined to fail from the beginning, the city has, and rightfully so, reversed its traffic signal removal decision at a number of area intersections, the corner of St. John and Topping for starters.

The take-away on this issue for city government should be that community input should be sought before a decision of this magnitude is implemented. Magnitude from the standpoint of how dangerous an intersection can be to pedestrians, primarily school children, when a signal is removed.

If you were one of those who stood up and made noise in regard to traffic signal removal, give yourself a hand. Maybe now the bureaucrats and elected officials at city hall will take matters like this to the neighborhoods before unilaterally making a potentially deadly decision. We’re not holding our breath, however, especially with this mayor’s “top down” approach to governing. Note to those at city hall: You work for the citizens, not the other way around.
