A 32-year-old Kansas City man has been charged with first degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action, both felonies.

According to court documents, two Kansas City police officers observed Rolando D. Wheeler trespass on Charlie Parker Square Property near Mary Lou Williams and Woodland, where the officers were working off-duty. When the officers conducted a pedestrian check on Wheeler, he fled on foot toward the Wayne Minor Apartments. As the officer was chasing Wheeler, Wheeler fired his gun at the officer several times.

Officers apprehended Wheeler near 8th and Euclid and retrieved a Ruger .357 revolver near 9th and Euclid.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $100,000 cash.
