First place in the Friends and Family team category this year at the Kansas City Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure went to the LaBruzzo sisters’ Angels of Hope team, garnering over 165 members and close to $6,000 raised for breast cancer research at the Aug. 12 walk held at at Union Station. To show their gratitude, the sisters, Rosemary, Vicki, Carol and Christy, catered a sit-down brunch at the Sons of Columbus Hall on Independence Avenue. The sisters have been organizing a team since 2001, one year after their mother Carol “Rookie” LaBruzzo succumbed to breast cancer. In 2009, the battle became personal once again when Rosemary (Pisciotta) was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rosemary celebrated three years of being cancer-free at this year’s walk. Since 1995, the Kansas City walk has raised almost $11 million for breast cancer research.
