To further combat crime in Northeast, the Pendleton Heights neighborhood is hoping to hire off-duty Kansas City Police Department officers to patrol Independence Avenue and the Pendleton Heights neighborhood from May through September.

Cost per officer to patrol during that time frame at least two nights a week for several hours is approximately $3,780. Pendleton Heights is hoping to offset the cost through the Bingo, Burgers & Beer Fundraiser at The Brick this Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All proceeds will go toward hiring off-duty KCPD officers.

Since Independence Avenue is a main thoroughfare, it attracts crime like prostitution and drug deals. The Avenue’s negative reputation could discourage future residents from moving into the neighborhood, said Pendleton Heights Neighborhood Association Vice President Christy Maddux.

“If you look at all the statistics, crime is mainly happening on the avenue,” she said. “We’re thinking if we can get the presence on the avenue, it will push the crime away.”

The April 28 fundraiser at The Brick, 1727 McGee St., Kansas City, Mo., will include a night of bingo, raffles and a silent auction. A $3 cover entitles you to one complimentary raffle ticket, 10 rounds of bingo and the chance to win a variety of prizes. Raffle tickets will cost $1 for one ticket or $2 for three tickets.

In addition, Boulevard Brewing Co. beer and burger specials will be available during the event.
