If you awoke this morning to what you thought was haze clinging to the treetops in Northeast, you weren’t alone. Smoke blanketed low lying areas throughout the community as an abandoned commercial building at 9th and Van Brunt was destroyed by fire early this morning.

The first alarm went out at approximately 5:30 a.m. and was soon followed by another calling for additional fire companies to respond to the scene. Firefighters entered the building but were soon called back out just before part of the roof collapsed. A defensive tactic was taken and water was poured onto the fire from both aerial and ground fire crews.

No cause for the blaze has been released. Investigators will remain on the scene throughout the day to determine the cause. We’ll provide updates at www.northeastnews.net as they become available.
