Danger just seems to follow the American Legion Fountain. It was moved from its original location at 9th & Main in the 1930s because it was too dangerous for people to use it in the middle of the intersection.

In its present location at Van Brunt Boulevard and Budd Park Esplanade, the fountain fell victim to an errant intoxicated motorist in 2002 and was painstakingly restored to its working condition by Parks Department artisans.

Today, the fountain was again struck by one of two cars racing down Van Brunt Boulevard. The driver fled on foot and eluded police. The fountain did not sustain serious damage outside of a scuff to its bowl. The car on the other hand…
