ESL Conversation Group
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host an ESL Conversation Group on Wednesday, August 22, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. In class you will learn basic English skills: grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and conversation. Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Drop in tech coach
The Northeast branch of the Kansas City Public Library will bring in a tech coach to assist the public on Thursday, August 23, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Get answers to questions about Microsoft Word and Excel; the internet; email, formatting a resume and online applications; syncing your smart phone, and so much more.

Video Game Night at the library
The Northeast branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a game night on Thursday, August 23, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Come play the Wii, the Xbox, the Playstation, and more. This event is appropriate for ages 10-18.

History @ Monument
The next edition of the History@Monument series, a monthly Kansas City history event held at Ilus Davis Park, will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 23. Join The Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City, Inc. for free hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream and history. The August 23 program is called ‘The History of Kansas City Parks and Recreations Department: Past, Present, & Future,’ and features former Parks Commissioners Anita Gorman, Ollie Gates and Carl DiCapo. Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, August 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Men in Black
The public is invited to a screening of the movie ‘Men in Black’ at Central Library on Saturday, August 25, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault. This title is Rated R and is recommended for adult audiences only.

Sheffield Neighborhood Association Meeting
The next meeting of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, August 27, beginning at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church (1029 Bennington).

 

Tuesday, August 28

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, August 28, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

Parks Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Parks Board will on Tuesday, August 28, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the KC Parks Administration building (4600 East 63rd Street Trafficway). The Board of Parks and Recreation holds public meetings twice a month on Tuesday at the Parks and Recreation Department headquarters. All meetings start at 2 p.m. and are open to the public.

Kansas City Museum Book Discussion
The Kansas City Museum at the Historic Garment District (800 Broadway Blvd. KCMO) will host ‘Book Dicussion: Signs of Resistance: A Visual History of Protest in America by Bonnie Siegler’ on Thursday, September 6 from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. This partnership with the Kansas City Public Library will be held in conjunction with the Museum’s ‘My Tee & Me: Statement & Identity in Kansas City’ exhibition, which is on view through September 8. This event is free to attend. RSVP is required through Kansas City Public Library website, as space is limited.
