Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Friday, February 3
Northeast Fit-Mix
Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, February 3, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a fitness class. The class alternates between chair fitness techniques and the new “Soul-Flo” yoga activities. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise in these courses at the North-East Public Library.

 

Knights of Columbus dinner/bingo
The Knights of Columbus Cardinal Glennon Council # 4613 will host a Dinner/Bingo night on Friday, February 3 at St. Anthony’s – St. Joseph Hall (3208 Lexington, 64124). An $8 meatloaf dinner will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Meal will include coffee; drinks and dessert will be available for an additional charge. Bingo will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

 

Northeast Chamber’s Community Call
The Northeast Chamber of Commerce’s next Community Call will be held on Friday, February 3, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at McDonald’s (5437 Independence Ave.).

 

Arts Starts at the Library
Come out the the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library for First Fridays on February 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. for a family-friendly art program. The first-floor Genevieve Guldner Gallery offers the exhibit ‘Coloring Space’, spotlighting the works of acclaimed painter and longtime Kansas City Art Institute instructor Warren Rosser. The Rocky and Gabriella Mountain Gallery houses ‘A Photo Album of Ireland,’ a touring exhibition of more than 120 photographs documenting the triumphs and turmoil of life in Ireland over the past century and a half.

 

Saturday, February 4
Emanuel Cleaver to host immigration town hall
Stop by Manual Technical Center (1215 E. Truman Rd., KCMO) on Saturday, February 4 beginning at 2:00 p.m. for an immigration-focused town hall meeting sponsored by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II. The panel will feature immigration lawyers and experts from local and national organizations.

 

Old House Expo 2017 at Kansas City Museum
Join Historic Kansas City and the Young Preservationists KC at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) on Saturday, February 4 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. for a day packed with information, assistance and networking – all about historic houses. The keynote speaker is Tamara Day, Kansas City’s own home restoration star and host of DIY network’s “Bargain Mansions.” Connect with craftsmen who can give advice on tasks like repairing windows and plaster, or dealing with wiring issues. Citizen Prep at North-East Public Library
Take part in a citizen prep course held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library. The class will continue through April 8. Come to the library to learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this FREE course!! Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

 

Sunday, February 5
KCMO Parks and Rec 2017 shelter reservations
2017 Parks and Recreation shelter reservations have officially begun. Reservations can be made online or in person at the KC Parks District 3 office (6901 Elmwood Avenue), at the Loose Park Garden Center (5200  Pennsylvania), or at any of the city’s community centers. Shelters are available for rental from May 1 through October 31.  All reservations are for the entire day (9 a.m. to 10 p.m.). Monday, February 6
Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Meeting
The next meeting of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will be on Monday, February 6 at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone). The keynote speaker will be City Manager Troy Schulte, who will discuss the G.O. Bond scheduled for a vote on April 4. He will answer questions about the initiative which includes three questions, so be sure to attend. Additionally, Schulte and SRNA President Leslie Caplan will report on the outcome of a meeting being held regarding residential and commercial development in Scarritt Renaissance.Teresa Garza, former county legislator, will also be a guest and will report on the Renovate America/HERO Program.

 

Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Monday, February 6 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

 

Tuesday, February 7
Beginning Spanish at the North-East Branch
Join the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Tuesday, February 7, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to start learning how to speak basic Spanish. This introductory class will be focusing on basic grammar, reading, and pronunciation. The class will run weekly at the same time through February 28.

5th Annual Art of Love event
Scarritt Renaissance Coffee Club and the Kansas City Museum will partner with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival on Saturday, February 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to host its 5th Annual ‘Art of Love’ Valentine Coffee in Corinthian Hall. Enjoy sweets and savories and experience the harp musings of Calvin Arsenia, followed by love scenes from some of Shakespeare’s finest plays—Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, and As You Like It—performed by professional actors. Breakfast hors d’oeuvres and gourmet coffee starts at 9:00 a.m. – performances start at 10:00 a.m. The event’s free, but space is limited. NEKC Chamber business classes continue
Now that it’s new headquarters are open, the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is looking to utilize its space. To that end, the chamber will be offering business-oriented courses for chamber members in 2017. The next course will be held on Wednesday, February 15, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Chairman of the Chamber Board and local attorney Jerry W. Potocnik will begin a two-part discussion about real estate. The February 15 class will focus on real estate leases.
