An 18-year-old Kansas City man has now been charged in a drive-by shooting that occurred in the Sheffield neighborhood on March 16.

Juan Carlos Aguilar has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, tampering and armed criminal action.

According to court documents, the victim was hanging out at a friends house in the 1200 block of Ewing when she heard a single gun shot followed by the car alarm sounding on her sister’s GMC Yukon. When she walked outside, she witnessed a blue and white Ford Crown Victoria driving away, which she recognized as the vehicle belonging to her ex-boyfriend’s friend Miguel.

The victim told police she broke up with Aguilar three days prior and had been ignoring his calls all day.

When she discovered a bullet hole in the Yukon’s rear driver’s side door, she and her friend then drove away but later returned to the home on Ewing.

While the two were sitting inside the parked Yukon, the Crown Victoria returned and Miguel leaned out the passenger side window firing three to five shots, the ex-girlfriend told police. The friend corroborated the account. Neither of them were shot.

On March 27, police arrested Aguilar who waived his Miranda Rights and spoke to detectives. Aguilar initially said his friend Miguel fired the shots, but later admitted to firing the handgun himself. Aguilar further stated that Miguel handed him the gun, knowing Aguilar’s intentions to shoot at the vehicle.

Aguilar’s bond is set at $150,000.
