Vikings lose in district play, but make school proud

“Was that a basketball game or what,” Northeast High Athletic Director Steve Schottel beamed as he crossed the court following the district tournament game Friday night at North Kansas City High School.

Despite the valiant efforts of the Vikings boys team, they fell to the Central Blue Eagles 80-74 and settled for a second place berth in the Class 5, District 15 tournament. Throughout the game, both teams traded the lead up until the last 4 minutes of play. In the end, the game was decided on Northeast fouls and Central free throws. Senior Daylen Robinson had a career high scoring night with 57 points.

This lil news-pooch would like to thank (all due sarcasm intended) area elected officials for marginalizing community newspapers in the census bureau’s ongoing attempt to hire local workers. Despite numerous promises that newspapers would be part of a “multi-million dollar campaign” to recruit workers and encourage participation, community newspapers such as this one have seen nary a dollar of paid advertising, while radio and TV get huge ad buys.

Both County Legislator Scott Burnett and State Representative Leonard “Jonas” Hughes have apparently bought in to squeezing community newspapers out of the ad mix. These officials are the first ones in line to get their event or accolade into the pages of the paper for free, but when it comes to paid ads, they don’t want to support their community newspaper.
